RECIPE FOR BISIBELEBATH

Ingredients:

Seeraga Samba Rice- 1 cup

Toor Dal - 1 cup

Tamarind - golf ball size

Mixed Vegetables - 4 cups

Jaggery Powder - 2 tsp

Bisibelebath Powder - 5-6 tsp

Salt as needed

Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp

Instructions:

  1. Wash the rice and dal and put in pressure cooker along with 5 cups of water. Pressure cook both ingredients together for 5 whistles. Allow the pressure to release.

  2. Soak the tamarind in hot water and extract 1 cup of juice.

  3. In a kadai, heat up oil and add mustard seeds. Allow them to sputter.

  4. Add the mixed vegetables and sauté for a couple of minutes.

  5. Add the tamarind extract and 3 cups water and bring to a rolling boil.

  6. Leave the kadai on low flame and add the cooked rice and dal. Mix thoroughly on medium flame.

  7. At this point, the consistency will begin to thicken. Keep mixing to avoid clumping.

  8. Dilute the bisibelebath powder with little and add to the rice. Mix well and let it cook for 4-5 on medium flame.

  9. In a separate kadai, roast cashews in ghee or oil until they turn golden brown.

  10. Pour over the rice and switch off flame. Mix well and serve hot.

Tips & Tricks:

  • I have also tried this recipe replacing rice with millets (kodo millet). If you do this, soak the millets for at least one hour. The water measurement for cooking is the same.
